Hygiene & Prevention

If you are in search of healthy, sparkling pearly whites, there is no need to go to extremes to achieve them. Sometimes, simple solutions are the ones that are powerful and long lasting.

A daily, proper oral hygiene regimen is the foundation of good oral health. It’s an inexpensive and convenient way of keeping your teeth and gums healthy in the comfort of your own home.

Committing to your dental health will not only result in a dazzling smile, but can benefit your body, too! Thus, good oral hygiene can improve your overall wellbeing.

Oral Hygiene Basics

Brushing

Brushing your teeth is an integral part of your oral hygiene routine. It is advisable to brush your teeth at least twice a day and every after meal. It is not enough to brush your teeth regularly, but you must also use the proper techniques.

  • Tilt your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the gums.
  • Gently brush in and out the chewing surfaces of teeth and make sure to reach every tooth.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue gently. This helps remove the bacteria that can cause bad breath.

Things to remember!

Brush at least two minutes in a gentle manner. Harder brushing won’t make your teeth cleaner; it can even irritate your gums and teeth. Use a soft-bristled brush to protect your teeth and gums. Replace your toothbrush every three months.

Flossing

Your toothbrush is not a perfect tool that can 100% clean your teeth. Luckily, dental floss can help you get rid of the plaque hiding in those areas that a brush can’t reach.

  • Use 18” of dental floss. Leave at least one or two inches to work with
  • Gently rub the floss up and down between the teeth
  • Slide the floss beneath the gum line but avoid snapping the floss on the gums
  • Use a new section of floss for every tooth to avoid putting back the debris or plaque on your teeth

Be sure to floss at least once a day to prevent the new formation of plaque between your teeth. If you have difficulty flossing, ask your dentist for recommendation and suggestions.

Mouthwash

Use an antibacterial mouthrinse to remove the bacterial plaque. Mouthrinses also help prevent gum problems and keep your breath fresh for several hours. Ask your dentist what type or brand of mouthwash is best for you.

Diet

You’ve read that right. Diet is an important part of your oral hygiene routine. Though this doesn’t involve a brush or floss, your eating habits play a crucial role in keeping a healthy mouth. Sugar and carbohydrates are known to promote tooth decay. Consuming them in large amounts and on a regular basis makes your teeth at greater risk of dental problems. If you focus on eating healthy foods and beverages, your teeth can get the same nutritional benefits that your body receives.

Professional Dental Care

Boost your oral hygiene routine by visiting your dentist for regular check-ups and clean. No matter how well you clean your teeth at home, nothing beats professional care. Your dentist will thoroughly clean and polish your teeth using special tools. You will also be provided with correct brushing and flossing techniques to improve your home care. In addition, a visit to your dentist is a great opportunity to uncover any developing dental issues you might have.

Dental sealants are very effective in protecting your teeth from tooth decay. The procedure involves application of a tooth-coloured coating on the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

Sealants cover the deep grooves of the teeth, which can be at risk of decay. The coating serves as a barrier protecting the tooth enamel from food debris, plaque, and acid.

A safe and simple procedure, sealants are highly recommended for both adults and children to help protect their smile for life.

The Benefits of Dental Sealants

Dental sealant is a plastic resin that bonds to the pits and fissures of the teeth. It seals depressed areas and makes the teeth smoother and less susceptible to plaque. Also, sealed teeth are easier to clean; thus, they are less prone to developing decay.

Additional benefits of dental sealants include the following:

  • They can reduce the development of tooth decay between 80% and 90%
  • They are deal for patients who suffer from frequent dry mouth
  • They can help avoid stresses and expenses due to various dental issues
  • They look natural on teeth, therefore the treatment is barely noticeable

The Dental Sealant Procedure

The process of applying sealants on your teeth is quick and painless. It only requires one appointment to complete the procedure:

  • The dentist will thoroughly clean and dry the tooth before an acidic gel is placed on teeth
  • The gel will roughen the tooth surface so that the coating will strongly bond on teeth
  • After a few seconds, the dentist will wash away the gel and dry the tooth again
  • The sealant will then be applied onto the grooves of tooth
  • The sealant will be hardened using a special blue light

Dental sealants typically last from three to five years. With proper installation and maintenance, the sealant can significantly protect your pearly whites from decay and cavities.
